A permanent solution to ingrowing nails

Nail surgery is a common and safe procedure which boasts great results, providing a permanent solution to ingrowing toenails, in 97% of patients. Nail surgery is offered to those with severe or recurrent ingrowing toenails, or those with problematic nails where conservative treatment is not providing symptomatic relief.

Please email us on greenpodiatry@mail.com for an up-to-date price list for nail surgery.

The Procedure

The nail surgery procedure consists of removing a small section from one side, or two small sections from both sides or the whole nail, following injection of local anaesthetic. Then phenol is applied to the nails growth plate to stop it from regrowing. The procedure only takes approximately one hour, we ask someone to drive you home and for you to put your foot up. After a couple of days most people are able to return to work as long as it isn’t overly strenuous.

What is phenol?

Phenol is a chemical which we use in a majority of our nail surgery procedures, we apply it to the base of the nail after a section or all of the nail has been removed to stop the nail from growing back, in 97% cases. We strongly recommend phenol use when appropriate to minimise recurrence of the presenting problem.

Recovery

Recovery time is very individual, usually healing takes 6-8 weeks, this may be longer depending on your medical status and personal habits such as smoking and high-impact activity. You will be asked to reattend the surgery following your procedure to give you all the advice you need to look after you while you heal. We try and avoid big holidays and events but when in doubt, speak to our Podiatrist.

Booking an appointment

You will need to see the Podiatrist before booking your nail surgery procedure. If you are a new patient, you will need an initial consultation and if a returning client, we would ask you book a standard follow-up. This will allow us to ensure medical suitability and tell you all that you need to know and provide appropriate paperwork.
